Why this substack? Why did I feel the need to create something where I could dump my thoughts, opinions, jokes and anecdotes? Let's go back in time so that I can give you a proper response…
When blogs were a thing, I longed to have my own to connect with others and share my experiences. But I was not sure how plus I was mortified that someone from my class would find it. When Facebook came around I wanted to post about e-ve-ry-thing. Unfortunately my fear of judgment only allowed me to update my profile picture once or twice a year. And let me tell you, it was a big deal. It’s with M.A.C. makeup that wasn’t my shade, my brother’s Canon camera we’d steal from him, and a trendy jacket that my ‘bff' of the moment and I would shoot over a 100 pictures attempting to copy the cool girl's poses. I’d awkwardly stand in the middle of a flower field, braces on my teeth, acne on my face. What a time to be alive.
My brother still has no idea about the stolen camera. Ugo, if you’re reading this, thanks for purchasing such an expensive photography tool, I almost reached 200 likes thanks to it that day. That has got to have been my peak in retrospect.
Then there was Youtube… I’d spend hours watching other people’s lives hoping mine would, one day, be as interesting as theirs so that I would find the guts to record it.
I’ve always been craving an artistic outlet to channel my constant inner agitation. And as my good friend Adeline once said: “You don’t need to be good at it for it to serve its purpose”. So here we are.
Plus, I've officially entered this post graduation-era where all my friends are scattered all over the planet and I thought this might be a fantastic way to keep in touch. So bear with me as I invite you on this journey where I’ll be pouring my thoughts, stories, and realizations onto my screen for the sake of realizing my 14 year-old fantasy of being a blogger. Before you share any concern - rest assured that I have a therapist and a great best friend so you’ll get a filtered version of all my thoughts. The word vomiting will be tolerable. I love you too much to impose that on y’all.
My goals for the Summer are the following:
Make a post once a week where I share what I have been up to (this is mostly for my old professors and family), some opinions pieces, stories and recommendations.
Finally schedule my appointment with the ear doctor
Finish my visa work (Canada here I come!)
Provide you with a weekly read that will make your trip to the bathroom more entertaining. If you internally smile even just once while reading one of my posts I will consider my job done!
Include cool pictures so that we remain connected
This idea came from the one and only, Ada Shaw, my soulmate and best friend who always encourages me to be creative and got her own Substack a few weeks ago. Read about her adventures in France right here!! My format is largely inspired by the work of Dolly Alderton in her book “Everything I Know About Love”. Such a good read.
Much love and see you next weeks fellas, enjoy the sunshine.
Flore Xx
